Summary:
The idea of creating a ski jacket that is able to regulate body temperatures more easily and making it lighter than a bulky looking jacket that is hard for moving came from a trip Nate Adler makes to Brazil. He was on a scuba diving trip off coast of Brazil when he saw fivers in dry suits in Arctic conditions using noble gases to insulate theirs wet suits under the cold waters. Being a snowboard instructor back home in Utah, Adler had the struck of ideas of using noble gases in ski jacket and making them less bulkier and lighter that looks the divers wet suits.

With the help of Nick Sorenson and Brady Woolford, Alder started the idea of making a ski jacket looks less bulky and to integrate the use of noble gases into the ski jacket. The result is a new revolution of lighter ski jackets that can keep skier warm while wearing thinner, lighter and more comfortable jackets. The noble gas that is discovered that is suitable is argon gases.

To fund this project soon turn to be a business, Alder joined a number of business plan competition and gets feedback and also expanded his founding team. From wining first and second place in 11 business plan or innovation competitions, Adler was able to rake in more than $175,000 in prize money to start their business.

Kathryn Kerrigan
Being a basketball player in college, Kathryn Kerrigan always found it hard to find shoes to fit nicely on her. Although there were athletic shoes and flip-flops for her big size feet, but they lacks some fashionable design.

In 2003, Kerrigan took up MBS program at Loyola University Chicago. She was required to come up with a business idea and also to write a business plan during her last semester. Her business idea was to start a company that design and sell fashionable large sizes shoe. From a small assignment, it grew to a company eventually.

Before she had the idea of turning this simple assignment idea into a business, Kerrigan did some research and found out that many tall women like her had difficulty in finding a fashionable size 11, 12, or 13 shoes. She also found out that women who play sports from young will grow to have larger feet when they become adults.

After her MBA, Kerrigan took her business idea plan to a bank in hope of some load to start up her business. The banker that interviewed her was amaze with how well she knew about shoe industry and she talks the industry’s language fluently. She got $35,000 in loan. She then began to go to attend many trade shows to show her business plan and also naming her business after her name to build a personal brand. But she faces 2 problems. First is she didn’t know anything about she designing or selling shoes. Thanks to her parents extended network, she was able to travel to trade shows talking to suppliers and industry insiders. Secondly, she had to find a willing manufacturer to make her shoes. She eventually solved this problem and finally sold her first shoes in fall 2006. After her success, she expanded her product line to clothing line for tall woman. Her products are now sold online, in catalogs, and through women’s fashion boutiques across the United States and in Europe.

Matt Davidson was a molecular and cellular biology student in University of California. While taking his degree, he came upon a particular course called MCB 62 which was titled “Drugs and the Brain”. From that course Davidson came to learn that certain plants can be use for improving concentration n also reduce careless errors. The plants are rosemary and peppermint. Later on he had an idea of combining gum with hers to help sharpen mental function.

After graduation in spring 2006, Davidson when to work on his business idea. He researched the ingredient suitable to be make what is to be “Think Gum” with two criteria where the first is that is must be scientific evidence that the gum is able to have brain-boosting power and second tat it taste good. After six months, the first batch of gum was produced and distributed to anyone who would provide valuable feedback. After much testing n improvement, Davidson finally launched his gum named “Think Gum”.

Think Gum is able to facilitate an action referred as “context-dependent memory”. Context-dependent memory is a concept where when you learn something in the presence of a certain stimuli (like chewing Think Gum while studying), then when you’re in the presence of the same stimuli again (like chewing Think Gum during a test) your memory will be improved. Davidson sold over 1,000,000 pieces of Think Gum in 12-pieces packages by winter 2008 n now the gum is on sale on Davidson’s website and also in several retail locations in California n Davidson’s next goal is to expand distribution into more retail outlets and expand his business.
